Videos give life to website content and make posts look fresh. It is easy to explain whatever in a 2-minute video than in a 1500-word post. In the earlier versions of WordPress, you need to grab video embed code from the video site. The story, however, changed in latter versions (2.9 upward). The embed feature is all you need to embed any video from any video site on your WordPress site. This tutorial will show you how to embed video from any third-party site on your WordPress site. You can also check our tutorial on how to embed YouTube video in WordPress here.
The first thing you will need to do is find the URL of the target video. In YouTube, click the Share link located under the video you want to embed. The video link will appear in the Share This Video pane. Alternatively, you can directly copy the URL of the video from the web browser address bar.
In Vimeo, you only need to copy the video URL from the web browser address bar. A typical Vimeo URL will look similar to http://vimeo.com/7672398
Now head to WordPress! In the post editor, paste the video URL on a new line (⌘+v for Mac; Ctrl+v for Windows). Immediately, in the post editor, WordPress will give you a preview of the video. Depending on your theme, WordPress may modify the width of the video.
Video URLs Troubleshooting
When you use some browsers such as Google Chrome or Internet Explorer, the URL might be pasted as a hyperlink. When this happens, don’t panic! Just place the mouse cursor over the link and the link buttons will become highlighted immediately. Click the “Unlink” button and the video will be embedded correctly.
Embedding YouTube Playlist
Using the same technique explained, you can easily embed any YouTube playlist. Just ensure you don’t forget to copy the URL of the video page from the address bar of the browser.
Another way of getting the playlist URL is to find the embed code of the video.
The easy video embedding procedure described above can’t be used for some video site such as Ustream. Nonetheless, most of these sites provide embed codes for their videos. Just find the embed code and paste it. Generally, the embed code can be seen below the video player on the video page.
Get the embed code into the Text Editor by pasting. Use the keyboard shortcode ⌘+v for Mac and Ctrl+v for Windows.
In the Text Editor, switch to Text mode and paste the code. Pasting it into the Visual editor will not make the URL display as video. After pasting, you can go on to switch back to the Visual editor. Add other relevant content to the post, preview or publish the post if you’re satisfied with it. Viola! You’ve embedded your video in WordPress.
